PM Modi’s visit to Guyana holds special significance as he will pay homage to one of the world’s oldest Indian diasporas, which has been part of Guyana for over 185 years. Additionally, the Prime Minister will address the Guyanese Parliament, fostering deeper ties between the two nations.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) notes that approximately 320,000 people of Indian origin reside in Guyana, making it an important connection in India’s diaspora. PM Modi will also participate in the second India-CARICOM (Caribbean Community) Summit, where he will join leaders from across the Caribbean to discuss regional cooperation.
PM Modi Visits Guyana: The Prime Minister’s current trip also includes a productive visit to Nigeria, where he held talks with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and engaged with the Indian community there. During this visit, PM Modi was honored with Nigeria’s highest national award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), marking the 17th international award he has received from a foreign nation.
PM Modi’s visit to Nigeria was notable as it marked the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the West African country in 17 years. After Nigeria, he traveled to Brazil to attend the G20 Summit, where he met several world leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
On November 18, 2024, PM Modi had a brief interaction with President Biden on the sidelines of the summit, marking their first meeting since the recent U.S. presidential election. During his address at the G20 session, PM Modi reiterated the theme of India’s G20 presidency, “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” emphasizing its relevance in addressing global challenges.
PM Modi Visits Guyana: In his speech, PM Modi highlighted the critical issues faced by countries in the Global South, particularly the food, fuel, and fertilizer crises exacerbated by ongoing global conflicts. He called for the G20 to focus on solutions to mitigate these challenges.
The G20 summit, held in Rio de Janeiro, was attended by leaders such as President Biden, Chinese President Xi Jinping, President Macron, and Prime Minister Starmer. On November 19, 2024, PM Modi held multiple bilateral meetings with leaders from Brazil, Italy, Indonesia, Portugal, Norway, Chile, Argentina, Egypt, and South Korea. These discussions focused on deepening cooperation in areas such as defense, security, trade, and technology.
